David Williams continues work at Pedreña

David Williams has completed another phase of renovation work at the Harry Colt-designed course at Real Golf de Pedreña on Spain’s north coast.

In 2010, Williams devised a masterplan for the course, which originally opened in 1928, and he has since overseen its implementation, which was .

Over the past year, bunkering has been reworked on the eighth, thirteenth and fourteenth holes, including the installation of Better Billy Bunker lining and Durabunker edging.

On the thirteenth, new bunkers were created and an original and previously filled-in Colt-designed fairway bunker was also reinstated.

On the fourteenth, an additional bunker was introduced on the left side of the fairway, and changes to the greenside and approach bunkering included the merging of two small bunkers on the right-hand side of the green to create one large greenside hazard.

Larger, raised tee complexes were also created on the thirteenth and fourteenth.

The work was carried out by contractor Cugargolf of Jerez.

“A majority of tees and all the bunkers on the course have been rebuilt over the past fourteen years, and since 2016 all bunkers reconstructed using Better Billy Bunker lining and Durabunker edging,” said Williams. “Many of the bunkers have been redesigned and repositioned to better reflect modern play.”

Williams anticipates further work at the club: “During our fourteen-year involvement, we have added proposals over and above those in our original masterplan, and many of these are still to be implemented,” he said.

The club has an additional nine-hole course, designed by Seve Ballesteros. When holes on the main course were under construction, the Seve course was used to allow a full eighteen to be played.

“There are still improvements to be made to the Seve-designed course,” he said. “We have undertaken work on it already, often in the fallow winters when we were not working on the Championship Course, including building two completely new par-three holes, required when a major reservoir was built over two holes on the course to provide water storage capacity for the complete venue.”
