Belfair’s East course reopens following four-month renovation project

Belfair, a private golf club community in Bluffton, South Carolina, has reopened its East course following a four-month renovation project.

Belfair has two golf courses designed by Tom Fazio – the West and East – which opened in 1996 and 1999 respectively. The East course is a par-71 layout measuring 6,900 yards from the championship tees and is inspired by the links courses of Scotland, but also showcasing the area’s freshwater lakes and lagoons.

Using GPS coordinates gathered from Fazio’s original design, green complexes have been updated to their original size. Greens were resurfaced with TifEagle grass, while fairways, tees and collars were resurfaced with Latitude 36 bermudagrass.

Bunker renovations included updating the drainage in all greenside and fairway bunkers with the Capillary Concrete bunker system, as well as filling the new bunkers with G-Angle sand.

“The West course at Belfair already ranks as one of the top 100 private residential courses in the US,” said Ray Pilch, president of the Belfair Property Owners Association. “With this renovation and enhancement, we are hopeful of achieving similar recognition for the East course as well.”

Belfair’s director of agronomy Keith Einwag and Troon’s senior vice president of golf course development Ron Despain oversaw the project, with construction work completed by McDonald and Sons.

The project is part of Belfair’s long-range plan to reinvest more than US$20 million into the club and community over the next ten years.
