Bled to host Harradine Trophy
The tenth Don Harradine Memorial Trophy will be held on the King’s course in Bled, Slovenia, on 22-23 September.
The tournament is organised and held under the patronage of the greenkeeping associations of Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia and was specifically created for the head-greenkeepers of those four countries. Harradine, whose son Peter now heads the firm that bears his name, was a founder member of the European Society of Golf Course Architects and the first European based member of the British Association of Golf Course Architects until his death in 1996.
Among Harradine’s main concerns was providing education and training for greenkeepers. In 1971, along with his wife Babette, he created the International Greenkeepers Association in. The Don Harradine Memorial was created to provide a reminder of his support for greenkeepers. The golf tournament has taken place on a Don Harradine-designed course each year since 1999. This year’s hosts are Bled’s King’s course and Gorazd Nastran, chairman of the Slovenian Greenkeepers Association. The King’s course was opened in 1937 and redesigned by Harradine in 1972. Yugoslav King Aleksandar Karađorđević chose Bled as his summer residence and decided to build the 18 hole golf course, the cradle of Slovenian golf and one of the oldest courses in this part of Europe.
