Bobby Jones Golf Course closes for major renovation project

The Bobby Jones Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia, has closed this week ahead of an 18-month renovation project.

Plans include the development of a reversible nine-hole course, which can be played both ways for an 18 hole round. This was designed by the late Bob Cupp – his last project before his death last year.

A driving range, indoor instruction area and short game practice area will also be developed.

The Bobby Jones Golf Course Foundation is investing around US$23 million in the redevelopment of the golf course and its clubhouse.

The foundation will also be working with Georgia PGA and US Kids Golf to help promote the game among young people in Atlanta. A nine-hole ‘wee links’ course featuring holes of between 50 and 70 yards will be created to support this, and will be named the ‘Cupp Links’.

The project is set to be completed by autumn 2018. Once reopened, the course will be the new home of the Georgia State University Women’s and Men’s golf teams.

“This was Bob Cupp’s last project, and it will be an enduring legacy to both him and Mr Jones, unique in design and playability,” said Marty Elgison, president of the Bobby Jones Golf Course Foundation. “We want to thank the many donors throughout the State of Georgia and even beyond who have helped make the vision a reality, as well as those who have volunteered their time and expertise.”
