Book tells story of Crooked Stick
Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indiana, which hosted last week’s US Senior Open, is the subject of a new book detailing the club’s history and the story of its creation by the legendary husband and wife design team of Pete and Alice Dye.
The venue of John Daly’s emergence from obscurity at the 1991 USPGA Championship, Crooked Stick was Dye’s first design after returning from a 1963 trip to Scotland, and, as a result, occupies a vital position in the post-war history of golf architecture.
“I don’t think I’d even be in the golf business if it hadn’t been for Crooked Stick,” said Pete Dye in a recent interview conducted in the club’s Dye Room. “When I look at Crooked Stick – and I know I built it in 1964 – I’m always amazed at how close it is to what I’ve been trying to do.”
The book, by club historian and author Chris Wirthwein, is based on seven years of research and multiple interviews with the Dyes. Crooked Stick Golf Club: A story of the original masterpiece from America’s first couple of golf is published by Paramount Market Press.
