Doug Carrick to design par-66 layout for Ontario club

Fergus Golf Club in Ontario, Canada, has appointed Doug Carrick to create a new design on the site of the former Lake Belwood club, which was originally built in 2000.

The club – which was formed in 2010 as a merger of Lake Belwood and the nine-hole Fairview club, which opened in 1977 – is bisected by a regional highway. The new course will occupy the land on the north of the highway, while the former Fairview land to the south will be redeveloped into a residential community by Geranium Homes.

“The new course is a compact layout situated on 100 acres of land and is unlike anything I have designed to date,” said Carrick. “The course is a par 66 measuring just over 5,200 yards from the back tees. It features eight par threes, eight par fours and two par fives. I believe it will appeal to golfers who want to play a challenging, interesting and fun layout in under four hours.”

A new clubhouse is also planned.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to redefine what a local public golf course can be,” said Shawn Evans, president of GolfNorth, which owns and operates the club. “Golfers will be thrilled with the new design and clubhouse, but Fergus will remain an affordable option for the residents of Centre Wellington and area.”

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2024 for a scheduled opening in 2026.
