Dye Designs to oversee renovation of Fripp Island’s Ocean Point course

Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort in South Carolina has appointed Dye Designs Group to oversee a renovation of the Ocean Point course.

The resort, which is on a barrier island located along the Atlantic coast in the Lowcountry part of South Carolina, has two 18-hole courses: Ocean Point, designed by George Cobb, and Ocean Creek, laid out by the design firm of Davis Love III.

Seascape Hospitality Group acquired the resort in 2023 and work on Ocean Point will begin in June 2024. The aim for the new owners is to modernise the course, while also respecting Cobb’s original design.

Cynthia Dye is leading the project alongside her son Matthew McGarey. “With five holes of unobstructed oceanfront views, Ocean Point golf course is undoubtedly an architect’s playground,” said Dye. “The premier course location coupled with its natural Lowcountry elements provide a solid foundation for our design team to elevate. We’re excited to bring our modern course vision to life while preserving historic elements inspired by Cobb’s original design.”

Dye Designs has reviewed plans created by Cobb for his other courses and is planning to incorporate several of Cobb’s design elements. One example is the conversion of over 200,000 square feet of grass to sand-based waste areas to maximise the course’s coastal setting.

The project will also see bunkers reconstructed and reshaped, several tees levelled, and replacing cement cart paths with crushed limestone.

“This project is one of many significant capital improvements planned for the entire resort, with several already underway,” said John Scappatura, chief operating officer of the resort. “These renovations will significantly enhance the overall golf experience for our members and guests to enjoy. The totality of the facilities upgrades underway embody our unwavering commitment to this area. We couldn’t be more excited about the future of Fripp Island.”
