Forte opens new Sicilian resort

Developer Sir Rocco Forte has opened Verdura, his new golf resort in Sicily. Set on 1.8km of coastline – which has, unusually, been reserved entirely for golf holes – the 230 hectare resort is located in  the island’s southwest, about an hour’s drive from the capital Palermo.

American Kyle Phillips has designed the two eighteen hole courses, and a nine hole par three loop. The two main courses, the 7,221 yards East and the 7,474 yard West have been planned as co-equals; each has a number of holes at the water’s edge. A composite course, including all the waterfront holes, is available should Verdura attract a major professional event.

Forte said: “Verdura brings together the talent and experience of some of the world’s best hotel, golf course and spa designers.  I look forward to welcoming guests to Verdura and sharing the success of the resort with the people of Sicily.”

Director of golf Niall Cameron said: “The sheer size of the resort gives a wonderful feeling of being totally isolated and at one with nature. The peace and quiet of the courses, punctuated only by birdsong and the gentle rustle of the wind, makes the stroll through the rolling fairways a delight. Kyle Phillips has designed yet another masterpiece which is surely destined to become a must-play venue.”
