Ground broken at Kittitian Hill

Construction is under way at the Kittitian Hill golf course on the island of St Kitts in the Caribbean.

Designed by Gary Johnston of European Golf Design, in association with US Masters winner and 2006 Ryder Cup Captain Ian Woosnam, the course sits on the lower slopes of Mount Liamuiga. Each hole will offer panoramic views of the Caribbean sea and surrounding islands.

The golf course forms part of the planned Kittitian Hill resort, which is planned to include residential properties, restaurants, artists’ studios, an infinity pool and screening room. Future plans include a film festival in the outdoor amphitheatre. A Beach Club, Tennis Courts and Luxurious Spa will also form part of the development. Sedona Resorts will manage the resort.

EGD says the 6,825 yards, par 72 golf course makes the most of the natural terrain to and uses the numerous ghauts (valleys) providing testing hazards that must be negotiated to reach the rolling green complexes. The course has been designed to address social and environmental issues, including conserving water by using native grasses that match the climate, maintaining and monitoring the quality of natural watersheds and groundwater, using locally sourced materials, and integrating food producing plants into the golf landscape which can be harvested for use within the community.

Johnston said: “The views from the site are quite amazing, with sea views on every hole. The course promises to be an exciting and beautiful development that blends harmoniously with the environment.”

The course is due for completion in autumn 2012. Phase 1 of the resort opens in December 2012.
