Ian Andrew embraces Flynn style at Springdale

Ian Andrew is overseeing a renovation of the William Flynn-designed golf course at Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, New Jersey.

The architect is aiming to embrace Flynn’s design philosophy for the renovation, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2023. Work is already under way, starting with bunkers, and moving onto irrigation before the end of autumn.

Springdale opened in 1895 with a design by Gerard Lambert. The course, located next to Princeton University, was redesigned by Flynn in 1926 and plays as a par 71 of 6,380 yards.

Wayne Morrison, co-author of The Nature Faker – William S. Flynn, Golf Course Architect, recently said: “The collection of 17 superb and original Flynn putting greens makes Springdale a unique, significant destination for the study of classic golf course architecture. It’s great to see that Springdale Golf Club is taking the necessary steps to ensure the preservation of this walkable and enjoyably challenging masterpiece for future generations.”

The club has said that it commissioned the golf course renovation to take advantage of the boom in golf participation.

Read more about the boom in golf in the October 2023 issue of GCA.

“New players are discovering the game at a rate we haven’t seen since 1997’s Tiger-mania,” said club president Erin Hamrick. “What strikes me is the diversity of new golfers. We’re seeing more women and young people come into the game than ever before. We have a responsibility to provide a welcoming club with a great atmosphere, lots of opportunities to play in a variety of formats, with helpful instructors, so we can grow with the game and have a lot of fun in the process.”
