IMG designs new nine-hole course in Mauritius

Clearing work has started on a new nine-hole par-three golf course designed by IMG at Azuri Ocean and Golf Village on the northeast coast of Mauritius.

“The site offers several outstanding features including a river with dramatic tree-lined banks, rocky outcrops across gently undulating terrain and magnificent views to the Indian Ocean, located only a few hundred yards from the course,” said Paul Burley, senior vice president of IMG Golf Course Services.

Holes on the course will range in length from 119 to 198 yards. The first four holes will run alongside the edge of the river on the west side of the course where there is significant elevation change, while holes five to eight will be routed on a more gently undulating area of the site.

“The ninth will no doubt be the signature hole and is a quite beautiful par three measuring 147 yards and playing to an island green, which sits in front of the clubhouse and requires a very precise tee shot,” said Burley. “The course provides a variety of stunning holes that will be no pushover, given the challenging greens complexes, variety of putting surfaces, precision required off the tee and breeze from the Indian Ocean.”

Azuri Ocean and Golf Village is a lifestyle community. The new golf course is the latest development at the community, along with the construction of new luxury villas.

“Mauritius is blessed with several outstanding 18-hole golf courses, but this will be a first for the island given the dramatic backdrop to many of the holes,” said Burley. “This will be an unforgettable experience for all levels of golfers and a terrific addition to Azuri and golf in Mauritius.”

Construction work will begin in April and the course is expected to open by summer 2022.
