Jim Lipe completes renovation of Southern Trace in Louisiana

Jim Lipe has overseen a renovation of the golf course at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Arthur Hills layout was originally built in 1988 and has hosted several tournaments including the Web.com Tour’s Southern Open from 1990-2002.

The $4.2 million project at the Troon Privé club focused on rebuilding all 18 greens and resurfacing them with Mach 1 bermuda, as well as reshaping fairways, reconfiguring tees, implementing irrigation and drainage upgrades, and the addition of a new short-game practice area.

Cart paths were also repaired and rerouted, with retaining walls reinforced, pressure washed and stained. Bridges were added on holes five and fifteen and tree canopies on several holes have been cut to improve playability and turf health.

The new four-acre, 13,000 square-foot practice area has two greens and four bunkers, and gives players the opportunity to practice a wide variety of short game shots.

“I’m very pleased with what we’ve accomplished here,” said Lipe. “As a long-time Southern Trace member, I was able to identify areas on the golf course that needed to be changed or updated, and address those during this renovation. We have a wonderful superintendent, Graham Kornmeyer, who brought a lot of expertise and experience to this project.”

Wadsworth Construction, Black Creek Construction and Winterberry Construction executed the work over a two-year period.

“We essentially have a brand-new golf course with a new irrigation system and new greens,” said Alexander Mijalis, vice president of Southern Trace’s board of directors. “We have modernised the architectural features by a renowned golf course architect. It’s an exciting time for the membership of Southern Trace Country Club.”
