Ken Moodie opens putting course at Westminster Park

Ken Moodie of Creative Golf Design has opened a new putting course at Westminster Park on the outskirts of Chester, England.

The 18-hole course is another step in the architect’s plans to revitalise the public facility having taken over the lease from the local council, which operated the nine-hole par-three Westminster Park golf course since it opened in the 1970s.

Moodie has already renovated the cafe before moving on to the putting course, which he opened in early March alongside Ken Brown. Former tour pro Brown is now well known for his role as a BBC golf commentator, and he is also a consultant for Creative Golf Design. Moodie is now turning his focus to renovation work on the nine-hole course at Westminster Park, which will reopen in May 2024.

“I have been planning GreenDay Café and Golf for many years,” said Moodie. “It’s been my ambition for over 10 years to have a world-class putting facility here in Chester, which will provide a fun activity for families to enjoy, and also a good place for golfers of all standards to practice their putting game.”

The mini golf course has been designed to be wheelchair friendly and has been planted with pollenating shrubs. There are also plans to install lighting, so evening play is possible.

Construction took eight weeks with Adi Butt of Lakeland Earthworks executing the base shaping, with Moodie involved both as project manager and dump truck operator.

Southwest Greens supplied and installed the synthetic grass. Moodie said: “I looked at many alternatives, but most ran too fast to provide a fun and enjoyable experience for a beginner, while offering a realistic practice experience for a regular golfer. I wanted something that would run at between nine to ten feet on the Stimpmeter, which Southwest Greens were able to guarantee.”
