Kevin Atkinson completes renovation at Red Rocks in Colorado

Kevin Atkinson has completed a renovation of the golf course at Red Rocks Country Club near Denver, Colorado.

The architect’s aim has been to add more variety, and he has worked with contractor Landscapes Unlimited to rebuild tees, bunkers and greens. The course has also been regrassed, and work completed on irrigation and cart paths.  A new 45,000-square-foot putting green has also been created near the clubhouse.

At the sixth, now a short par three, Atkinson has utilised a volcano green concept, “to create more drama in elevation with the green perched up and hanging on the edge of the severe canyon,” he said. Golfers now have clear views of downtown Denver, the Red Rocks Amphitheatre and the Rocky Mountains.

Bunker placement has been adjusted to increase the challenge for bigger hitters.

“Collaborating with Kevin and Red Rocks’ team to reimagine the course layout, construction and infrastructure resulted in a stout golf experience for members and guests,” said Dave Linngren, vice president of the west region at Landscapes Unlimited. “Each hole requires strategic management but is neither designed nor constructed to unfairly bite golfers.”
