Kohler launches Hamilton plans

Kohler Company has announced its plans for the redevelopment of the iconic Hamilton Hall building in St Andrews.

The firm, which already owns the town’s Old Course Hotel, as well as the Duke’s golf course, and the Whistling Straits resort in the US, bought Hamilton Hall last year after a controversial bid process, for a rumoured price of £11.5 million.

Kohler’s plans for Hamilton Hall call for the building to be turned into 26 luxury apartments, and for the building to be renamed Hamilton Grand, combining its two previous names, as university hall of residence and hotel, in which capacity it first opened in 1895.

The building is in extremely poor repair, and expert observers have reckoned the cost of the restoration at up to £30 million. “Our goal is to restore Hamilton Grand and create a dwelling that will make the people of St. Andrews proud,” said Debbie Taylor, the president of Kohler’s hospitality division. “We have been honoured to work with community members throughout this process. With their support, we are pleased to unveil our plans to the rest of the world.”

The apartments will offer two, three and four bedroom accommodation, including a penthouse with a private balcony. Services provided to residents will include butlers, a members’ library, a public restaurant and bar, and a private golf concierge. Membership of the Duke’s course will be included, but the concierge won’t be able to guarantee access to the Old Course. It is not yet clear whether residents will qualify for the prized Links Ticket, which gives unlimited golf on the seven public St Andrews courses.
