Lee Schmidt elected President of ASGCA at Tulsa meeting

Lee Schmidt has been elected President of the American Society of Golf Course Architects at the organisation’s annual meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which took place from 3-7 May. The architect is a principal of Schmidt-Curley Design, the firm known for its prolific golf course design work in China, notably the multi-course Mission Hills resorts at Shenzhen, Dongguan and Haikou.

“I am proud of how we at Schmidt-Curley Design, in a small way, have helped grow the game in other parts of the world. In just 20 years the growth of golf throughout Asia has been amazing,” said Schmidt. “I am also proud that ASGCA members continue to work together to provide suggestions, solutions and innovative design concepts to make the game of golf better for future generations. Our new designs need to be creative, problem solving and adaptive in order to meet the environmental, economic and social needs of today’s projects.”

Schmidt has designed and renovated more than 100 courses in his career. Upon graduation from Purdue University, Schmidt worked as a design associate for Pete Dye for seven years, on projects including Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. He headed the Design & Construction division during twelve years with Landmark Land Company and also spent seven years as a senior design associate with Nicklaus Design.

Schmidt-Curley Design has offices in the USA and China and has also designed courses in Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand.

A full report from this year’s ASGCA Annual Meeting in Tulsa will appear in the July 2014 edition of Golf Course Architecture magazine.
