Lyne Morrison develops masterplan to boost female participation at Springwood

Architect Lyne Morrison has developed a golf course masterplan for Springwood Country Club in New South Wales, Australia, with construction potentially starting in September 2024.

Springwood was established in 1905 on land, previously used as a fruit orchard, within the Unesco World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains Area.

The club, which is facing the challenge of an ageing membership, appointed Morrison in November 2022 to redesign the course. Her brief was to address Springwood’s declining female membership, attract more junior players and to make the layout better fit the terrain. Additional aims include enhancing the course’s sustainability and biodiversity, addressing safety issues, reducing maintenance costs and revamping the practice facilities.

“While the course is a par 69 for men, it is a challenging par 74 for women,” said Morrison. “Participation among women and juniors is low. The proposed course works aim to revitalise the club and attract a more diverse membership.”

Morrison’s plan includes new forward tees, routing adjustments to the last six holes to address safety issues and the naturalisation of out-of-play areas and carries. Her proposals also include the creation of a 1,500-square-metre putting course, a short-game area with two greens and bunkers, a long-game practice area, an extra par-three hole and a three-hole short course. Work will also see the course’s creek restored, a reduction in maintained turf, a review of bunkers and the introduction of native vegetation.

“This masterplan aims to significantly enhance the golf experience for all players,” said Morrison. “By strategically placing new tees and reimagining practice areas, we’re creating a course that not only challenges skilled players but also encourages participation among women and juniors. Importantly, we’ve ensured that senior members will continue to enjoy the game they love. This inclusive approach is designed to lift participation levels across all demographics, making Springwood a truly welcoming destination for golfers of all ages and abilities.

“This project marks Australia’s first masterplan that prioritises forward tees based on player swing speeds. The initiative aims to boost participation by enhancing inclusivity and enjoyment for an often-overlooked player segment.”

The course will remain open throughout the project, with a spare hole being used to allow members to play 18 holes.

Springwood recently secured a ‘Level the Playing Field’ grant from New South Wales government’s Office of Sport. These funds are to be used to improve women’s and girls’ access to and participation in sport as well as promoting environmental sustainability. The funding will support the construction of forward tees, advancing the club’s planning initiatives and reinforcing its commitment to accessible golf.

Springwood is a signatory of the R&A Women in Golf Charter and endorses Golf Australia’s Women and Girls’ Engagement Plan.
