New Mexican project for Woods firm

Tiger Woods' much-delayed design career may finally be up and running.

Woods' firm, which has seen its first three projects, in Dubai, North Carolina and Mexico, either cancelled or put on ice due to the global economy, is in construction on a new project, at the Diamante Cabo San Lucas community, also in Mexico.

Woods' project at Diamante, which will be called El Cardonal, will sit alongside the resort's first course, the Dunes course, designed by architect Paul Cowley on behalf of Davis Love III's firm, which opened in 2009.

Construction of El Cardonal began in September, and is expected to take around eighteen months, implying an opening in late 2014 or 2015.

“Diamante is a growing resort community that is already home to Golf magazine's 58th ranked course in the world,” said CEO Ken Jowdy. “We believe a Tiger Woods Design course will be the perfect complement to the Dunes course and will embody the high standards that we have set.”

“While the Dunes is reminiscent of a classic Scottish links, this is going to remind people of the old-style California courses,” Woods said. “We will use the existing arroyos that traverse the site and well-placed bunkers to create definite strategic choices and carries off the tees." ”

El Cardonal's bunkers are planned to have a traditional look while natural, irregular contours will be preserved in the wide fairways. “Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf,” said Woods.

Elsewhere on the property, the 100,000 square foot Dunes clubhouse, which includes 20 two bedroom residences, is set to open on 10 November.
