New nine-hole short course to open at Regent Park Golf Club near Bolton

A new nine-hole family golf course is to open near the town of Bolton, UK.

Regent Park Golf Club will be home to the new development, which is to be developed by Dave Thomas Limited Golf Architecture firm.

Already home to a municipal course that opened in 1922, Regent Park has received a six-figure fund to bring the new course to fruition. The club will take on new staff and open a new pro shop as part of the latest developments.

The firm has been involved in this project for some time. Dave Thomas Limited first became involved to help solve a flooding issue to four of the golf holes located within a floodplain. Paul Thomas of the firm spoke to GCA about the project.

“Our task was to relocate five new golf holes to adjacent farmland thus allowing the floodplain to return to and regenerate under Environment Agency supervision,” said Thomas. “The new golf holes benefited from some 290,000 square metres of inert landfill to provide distinctive height differentials and landfall. The redesign also allowed for the extinguishing of one further existing golf hole that freed up land to build a new nine hole family golf course.”

The course was formerly a traditional municipal golf course taken over and run under lease arrangement by the owning company Regent Park Golf Club Ltd.

According to Paul Thomas, the course will be comprised of par threes ranging from 70-120 metres in length.

Regent Park is home to a floodlit driving range and has a thriving membership, and Thomas believes the new nine holes will only further the club’s reputation.

“Work began with some clearing a few weeks ago after storms affected some of the tree line. We anticipate completing the work in mid summer. The addition of this nine-hole short course aimed at family golf will be a fine addition to the Bolton golf scene.”
