New South Course at Arcadia Bluffs begins to take shape

Construction of a second golf course at Arcadia Bluffs in Arcadia, Michigan, is now underway.

Designed by Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design, work on the South Course commenced in April 2017.

The earthwork and shaping process is currently taking place on the site of the new course, which covers 310 acres and lies a mile south of the existing course.

The course has been designed with wide fairways, flat bottomed bunkers and steep grass faces, and as something of a throwback to the types of courses created in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Many of the greens will feature false fronts and squared off edges. Different areas of the greens will also be protected by steep slopes.

The greens, tees and fairways on the South Course will seeded with 007 bentgrass. The primary roughs will be 90 per cent turf type tall fescues and 10 per cent bluegrass.

Architect Dana Fry of Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design said: “The ultimate goal of this course is that it feels timeless in its design, and will provide golfers an ‘Old World’ golf course feel that few golfers have ever experienced.”

As well as the new course, a new practice range, short game area, putting green and clubhouse will also be created at the South Course site.

The new South Course is expected to open in 2019. Arcadia Bluffs is currently home to an 18-hole course originally designed by Warren Henderson and Rick Smith.
