New three-hole short course to open at Wilmington Municipal GC

A new three-hole short course is to open for play next week at Wilmington Municipal Golf Course in North Carolina.

Designed by architect John Fought, the course will be used by The First Tee of Greater Wilmington youth programme.

The new three-hole facility features multiple sets of tees, a short driving range and a practice green.

“We had the vision to create a special three-hole course on which to introduce young people to the game of golf,” said Gordon Dalgleish, chairman of The First Tee of Greater Wilmington. “John took that vision and created everything we could have asked for and more. We could not have found a better partner in this project.”

Fought has previously worked at Wilmington Municipal, leading a restoration project on the course back in 2014.

“The short course will be a great place for kids to receive an introduction to the game and get a feel for how to play,” said Fought. “It’s a very cool facility as all three holes have their own characteristics and can be played from different distances.”

The facility’s opening coincides with Wilmington’s hosting of the Wells Fargo Championship, which takes place from 4-7 May 2017 at the nearby Eagle Point Golf Club.

An event to open the new facility on 2 May will be attended by professionals playing at the Well Fargo Championship, as well as youths and representatives involved with the Wilmington First Tee programme.
