Opening set for Player's Cliffs course

New owner Silver Sun Partners has announced that the seventh golf course at the Cliffs development in South Carolina will open in the autumn of 2013.

Silver Sun, a partnership between the Marshall, Texas-based investment firm Carlile Group, Dallas developer SunTx Urbana and Jacksonville real estate company Arendale Holdings, bought the Cliffs out of bankruptcy in August of this year. The partnership's reorganisation plan calls for the new ownership to repay US$64 million over 20 years to club members who had invested in the Cliffs, as well as investing up to US£85 million in new real estate for potential development.

The new course, known as the Cliffs at Mountain Park, is part of a 5,000 acre residential community, and has been designed by Gary Player's firm. “In designing the Mountain Park course we paid close attention to making the fairways firmer, not using as much water or fertiliser and taking full advantage of the natural characteristics of the land,” said Scott Ferrell, president of Gary Player Design. The Player firm has also moved its head office to the Cliffs.

Grassing of the course – set in a wooded valley surrounded by mountains and divided by the Saluda River – should be completed in the next few weeks, with the course ready for opening during the 2013 season.

No announcement has yet been made on the future of the Cliffs at High Carolina, the Tiger Woods-branded golf course also currently in development by the Cliffs partnership.
