PGA National to reopen Champion course after bunker renovation

PGA National Resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, will reopen its Champion course on 2 September following a bunker renovation by Nicklaus Design.

The course, which hosts the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic, was originally designed by George and Tom Fazio and opened in 1981, then redesigned by Nicklaus in 2002 and again in 2014. The 2022 project has seen some bunkers removed and all others rebuilt with the aim of improving playability and strategy. The hazards now have new subsurface drainage, Better Billy Bunker liners and G-Angle sand. New sod has also been laid throughout the course and cart paths have been restored.

“With the exciting work from Nicklaus Design complete, our celebrated Champion course is now better than ever,” said Jane Broderick, director of golf at PGA National Resort.

The bunker project is part of the resort’s $100 million investment into its facilities and follows the work Andy Staples completed in 2021 on the Match and Staple layouts.
