Pinehurst No. 8 reopens with updated greens and restored bunkers

Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina will reopen its No. 8 course following a project focused on agronomy and infrastructure.

The “agronomic remastering” of the Tom Fazio-designed layout includes updating greens with TifEagle bermuda, restoring bunkers with fresh sand, drainage upgrades and the removal of invasive trees that were limiting views and inhibiting sunlight.

Existing bermuda on tees and fairways has also been fraise mowed to remove thatch, which will tighten up lies and deliver more rollout from tee shots.

“No. 8 now appears crisper to the eye and plays firmer and faster the way Tom Fazio originally intended it,” said Pinehurst Resort’s director of agronomy Bob Farren. “Fazio, Pinehurst Resort owner Bob Dedman and Pinehurst Resort president Tom Pashley all agreed that No. 8 should retain its original, commemorative design. As such, these changes are aesthetic and agronomic with no alterations to the course’s architecture.”
