Putting course ‘amazing success’ at Black Butte Ranch

A new 12-hole putting course – designed by John Fought – has opened for play at Black Butte Ranch, a resort community in Deschutes County, Oregon.

The Little Meadow putting course has been built as a continuous loop that can be played in both directions, with holes ranging from 45 to 115 feet. It is located alongside the northeast corner of the Big Meadow course’s ninth fairway and near to the resort’s tennis courts and pub.

“It is a unique facility in that it is a continuous course that is connected from start to finish,” said Fought. “And you can play multiple routings including a reverse of the golf holes. As shown on the map [pictured] it was conceived as a 12-hole course but can play as nine or 18 holes since the putting area is connected. This also makes the mowing of the course much easier. There is a lot of movement in the contours, making all putts interesting.”

Fought developed the concept last year, with the six-week construction project completed in April by contractor Duininck Golf.

“It has been an amazing success so far,” said Fought. “Hundreds of people play the Little Meadow course every day.”

The architect has worked at Black Butte Ranch before, completing a $3.75 million renovation of the Glaze Meadow course in 2012.
