Rees Jones oversees renovation at New York’s Tuxedo Club

Golf course renovation work at The Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo Park, New York, is scheduled for completion in May 2022.

The project is part of a master plan developed in 2017 by Rees Jones and his senior designer Bryce Swanson, and includes a new ninth hole, the renovation of all bunkers, regrassing of greens surrounds and a new short game area.

The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr and opened in 1957, located five miles from the main clubhouse due to the construction of the New York Thruway.

Jones’s goal at Tuxedo is to bring the course “back to the future” by repositioning and reimagining bunkers and incorporating his father’s original style while improving playability. “The project will bring back the course’s classic look, while at the same time making the entire layout of the course more modern,” said Jones. “Dad knew that he had a wonderful site from which to work. The setting and flow of the holes were ideal for the creation of a minimalistic golf course that would stand the test of time.”

LaBar Golf Course Renovations began construction in October 2021 and is being assisted by Casey Klossner, director of agronomy at Tuxedo Club, who previously oversaw irrigation work and the rebuilding of several greens.

The initial work focuses on the new ninth hole and practice area. “The current renovation is a major step towards the completion of the master plan which, when complete, will transform the golf experience for The Tuxedo Club’s members and their guests,” said Jones.
