Renovations to the Golden Horseshoe Gold course to commence this May

The Golden Horseshoe Gold Course at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, is to close for renovation work later this year.

Rees Jones Inc. Golf Course Design has been hired to lead the upcoming project, which will focus on the course’s grasses and bunkers.

The project will involve the rebuilding of bunkers using new drainage techniques, and the introduction of new turf grasses on the course’s greens, fairways and surrounding rough.

Elevations on the greens on holes 2, 6, 12 and 18 will be altered as part of the work.

Work will commence in May, with the Robert Trent Jones Sr-designed course likely to remain closed until spring 2017.

Golden Horseshoe Golf Club is home to two 18-hole courses – the Gold and the Green courses – as well as the nine-hole Spotswood course, which was also designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The club’s Green course was designed by Rees Jones.

“Colonial Williamsburg’s board of trustees has approved a significant investment for the renovation of the Gold Course,” said Mitchell Reiss, Colonial Williamsburg president and CEO. “It is vital that we take care of the precious assets left in our stewardship so that we can offer our guests the premier resort experience today’s travelers demand.”
