Schmidt-Curley creating new course overlooking Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay

Schmidt-Curley Design has been hired to create a new 18-hole golf course near Ha Long Bay, Vietnam.

Working alongside the FLC Group for the second time, the course will be built on a mountainous site with views over Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The site features significant elevation changes, and a number of rocky outcrops and mature native vegetation will characterise the course.

“Ha Long Bay will soon have one of the most photogenic courses in the world,” said Brian Curley. “We are very fortunate and honoured to continue our maiden efforts into the Vietnam golf market with the FLC Group, a team with enormous vision that has its sights set on creating fantastic golf on world-class properties that will soon be at the forefront of the travelling golfer’s list of must-play destinations.”

A potential highlight is a 110-yard par-three hole overlooking the bay below.

“I grew up in Pebble Beach where the short par-three seventh hole has become a hole recognised around the world,” said Curley. “I believe we have the same opportunity here.”

Schmidt-Curley Design will be working alongside Flagstick Construction Management to create the course.

FLC Group has recently announced plans to build 20 new courses in Vietnam over the next five years. The firm has already hired Schmidt-Curley for a new course project which is now underway near Quy Nhon on the country’s south central coast.

The Ha Long Bay course is expected to be completed by the end of the year and to open for play in 2017.
