Sherman build done at alma mater
Architect Scot Sherman has completed a new, multi-purpose practice facility for the golf teams at his alma mater, Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.
The facility was built adjacent to the teams’ clubhouse at the University Golf Course and completes a 20 acre practice area which now includes a multi-directional driving range, multiple short game practice areas, bermuda and bent putting greens, and a seven hole, par three practice course.
“The Furman golf coaches recognised they could take advantage of several acres of unused property and build something unique for their teams, the University, and developing golfers,” said Sherman. “The first order of business was to raise funds for construction – a task which benefitted from input by a group of our alumni including Beth Daniel, Betsy King, Dottie Pepper, Brad Faxon, Cindy Davis, the president of Nike Golf, and Furman parent Peter Broome, a vice president of Titleist. Our goal then became building a place where golfers will discover every kind of shot, master their confidence, and have so much fun they can’t wait to practice. Furthermore, we are convinced projects like this will introduce new players to golf and help grow the game.”
“Today, time is such a precious commodity especially for the student-athlete. This facility gives our team members a place to quickly practice all aspects of their game because of its multi-functional design,” said Furman men’s coach Todd Satterfield. “We look forward to our current players improving here and showing off this facility to our future recruits as well.”
During dedication ceremonies Sherman noted: “Although we focused on designing and building something that provides unlimited options, its most important function may be as a place to build relationships among teammates, coaches, students and campers. As Gary Player always says, ‘Golf is a friend making machine’ – and we all know you can never have too many friends in life.”
MacCurrach Golf Construction was the contractor for the project which was completed in less than 75 days. Sherman also continues to supervise a multi-year master plan of improvements for the Furman Golf Course which will upgrade all areas of the facility when complete.
