Son Muntaner transforms surfaces with major grassing project

Golf Son Muntaner, the flagship course at the 63-hole Arabella Golf complex near Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca, is preparing for its first summer season following a major regrassing project.

The course, designed by German architect Kurt Rossknecht and opened in 2000, claims to be the first in Europe to feature Celebration bermuda grass, a variety that has become popular in the southern United States thanks to its resilience, low water consumption and ability to withstand low cutting heights.

The five-month regrassing project – which took place from May to September 2017 – was handled by the club’s in-house team, with input from Spanish consultancy firm Acttua and turf provider Novogreen, which has nurseries in Tarragona and Palencia.

Every blade of grass on the course has been replaced, with the goal of providing immaculate playing conditions all year round. Golf Son Muntaner stopped short of using warm season grass on the greens, instead replacing the existing grass with V8 creeping bent.

Bernat Llobera, the area director of Arabella Golf, said: “One of the core values at Arabella Golf Mallorca is our commitment to delivering a world-class resort that constantly exceeds expectations.

“The innovative project that we have carried out to completely rejuvenate the course at Golf Son Muntaner is a clear example of our dedication to provide the very best facilities for our members and guests to enjoy.

“This work will strengthen our position as one of the very best golf resorts in Spain and our investment ensures that our conditioning is second to none across the continent.”
