Spring reopening for Mohegan Sun
Mohegan Sun Country Club in Connecticut in the USA has completed a major renovation under the supervision of golf architect Robert McNeil.
Developed by the Native American Mohegan Tribal Commission and built by NMP Golf Construction, the new-look course will reopen in early 2012, having been closed for the renovation since summer 2010.
McNeil says the aim of the work was to freshen the look and strategy of the course while solving some inherent functional and agronomic issues. The project included the construction of 68 bunkers, new greens, surrounds and approaches, new tee complexes, newly routed holes, a complete cart path system, three lakes with automatic water transfer, extensive drainage and a new Toro irrigation system.
Storm water management was an important goal of the project, which also saw a reduction of ten acres in the maintained area on the course by 10 acres. Most rainfall will be captured in the new lakes for irrigation use.
Ayers Brook, which runs through the fourth, fifth and sixth holes was rebuilt, restoring the creek’s and strategic meandering restored. The new lake at the sixth hole was structured to provide skimming opportunities during heavy rains, resolving historic flooding issues along an adjacent road system.
