Tamarack reopens West course following Mungeam renovation

Tamarack Golf Course in East Brunswick, New Jersey, has reopened its West course following an 18-month renovation by Mark Mungeam.

Work at the public facility – owned by Middlesex County and managed by Indigo Sports, a Troon Company – began in autumn 2023 with the aim of enhancing the layout, originally designed by Hal Purdy.

“Our goal with the West course renovation was to elevate the playing experience while maintaining the integrity of the course’s original design,” said general manager Dave Mummey. “Mark Mungeam and Turco Golf have done an amazing job with the renovation. We’re excited to welcome golfers back to enjoy these improvements and experience a course that is both visually stunning and exceptionally playable.”

All greens have been rebuilt to USGA specifications, which were then seeded with bentgrass. Fairways have been reshaped and regrassed with creeping bentgrass and tees have been laser levelled and regrassed with Kentucky bluegrass. Nearly 75 new tees have been added to allow to extend the course to more than 7,000 yards from the back tee.

A key aspect of the project has been infrastructure updates, including the installation of a new irrigation system, new drainage lines and new drainage and liners from CapillaryFlow in bunkers.

“I am very excited about the upgrades made to Tamarack West,” said Mungeam. “The renovated course will be fun for all golfers, with enough strategic options and challenges to captivate the best players and beginners. Tee expansions allow the course to be played at any length from 4,900 to 7,000 yards. Though the corridors are the same as the original course, each hole has been completely rebuilt, and the nines have been reversed. The gently rolling land through woods and streams provides a delightful setting. I firmly believe that Middlesex County residents will enjoy and embrace the ‘New’ West course.”
