Tim Liddy completes three-course restoration at PGA West

PGA West in La Quinta, California, has completed renovation projects on three of its Pete Dye-designed courses.

The three-year project was led by architect Tim Liddy, who worked with Dye for nearly 30 years, and focused on the Stadium, Mountain and Dunes courses.

“The goal of this restoration project was to bring the courses back to their original conditions as Pete Dye first conceived them, while also upgrading elements for enhanced playability and sustainability,” said PGA West executive director Ben Dobbs. “We are thrilled to showcase the results of each renewed course, offering an unforgettable experience for golfers of every skill level while solidifying PGA West’s standing as one of the top golf destinations in the world.”

Liddy said the project was like an archaeological dig, particularly when restoring the original contours and aesthetic of greens. Original sand lines around bunkers and greens were hand dug, with turf then removed, as well as layers of organic material that had built up over the years.

Read more about the work completed on the Stadium. The course hosts the PGA Tour’s American Express tournament, with the next edition taking place from 16-19 January 2025.

Work on the three courses has been made possible by investment from the resort’s new owners, Hankuk Industry, which owns golf courses throughout the United States and Japan, and Century Golf Partners, an operator of high-end clubs and resorts.
