Tom Jackson returns to River Hills to lead renovation project

River Hills Golf & Country Club in South Carolina will close in June for a greens and bunker renovation led by original architect Tom Jackson.

Jackson, who designed the course in 1989, will restore greens to their original size by expanding the putting surfaces by 40 per cent – increasing the number of pinnable areas – and will install new TifEagle bermudagrass.

Bunker work will involve increasing definition and improving sightlines as well as playability. Founders Group International (FGI), which oversees golf management at River Hills, is also installing new bunker liners from Capillary Concrete.

“River Hills is a fantastic layout, and this project will guarantee it continues to deliver the quality and value golfers have come to expect,” said Steve Mays, president of FGI. “The changes in the green complexes will be dramatic with the added size and TifEagle bermudagrass, and the bunkers will be significantly upgraded. We are very excited about what these enhancements will mean for River Hills and our golfers.”

Renovations will be completed in time for River Hills’ reopening on 21 August 2022.

FGI is also carrying out similar work at Grande Dunes, 16 miles south of River Hills in Myrtle Beach.
