Troon CC reopens course following Tom Weiskopf and Phil Smith renovation

Troon Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, has reopened its Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course for member play following a seven-month renovation project overseen by Weiskopf and design consultant Phil Smith.

Contractor Heritage Links began work in May 2020, which has included rebuilding bunkers with Capillary Concrete lining and adding Caltega bunker sand. Some of the course’s bunkers were removed entirely.

The project has seen all greens resurfaced with A4 bentgrass, while tees, fairways and rough were re-grassed with Tifway 419 bermuda. All existing tees have been levelled and expanded, while several new forward tees have been built.

As part of the renovation, Weiskopf and Smith made additional design changes, with goals of enhancing playability, making sightlines more visible and assisting in course maintenance.

A new Rain Bird IC system with central control has been installed, along with a new Watertronics pump station.

“Over 34 years, we never had to re-do a green because it was too severe and never had to change much on a hole, because we spent enough time during construction to do it right the first time,” said Weiskopf. “During this renovation there was no need to change anything other than the surface of the greens, level the tees, improve the drainage and improve the playability of the golf course.”

Watch: Weiskopf provides members with a tour of the renovated golf course.

“When Troon Country Club opened the golf course it was ranked among the top 100 courses in the world,” said Garrett Wallace, general manager at Troon CC. “Thanks to the support of our members, Tom Weiskopf’s vision and Doug Fredrikson’s incredible work on the clubhouse, the newly reimagined Troon Country Club can again be considered among the finest private clubs in the world.”
