Trump files plans for second course

The Trump organisation has submitted preliminary plans for the second course at its new Scottish resort in Aberdeen. To be known as the Mary MacLeod Course, after Trump's Scottish-born mother, the new 18 has been designed by Martin Hawtree.

No timings have been confirmed for the planned development of the new course. Trump had previously pledged to invest no more money in the resort unless a projected offshore wind farm was blocked by the Scottish Executive, though he later backtracked on this, and has hinted that the resort's hotel may also go ahead in the near future.

The first stage of the detailed application process with Aberdeenshire Council has now begun with the submission of indicative plans for the new course to the southern side of the site. Trump said: Once again Martin Hawtree’s design is genius – we have the greatest piece of linksland in the world and the unprecedented demand to play our championship course has accelerated our plans to build the second course.”

The group says that over 10,000 rounds were played on the course during its first season, and that forward bookings are up by 55 per cent compared to this time last year.

Trump VP Sarah Malone said: “Our plans for the second golf course are moving forward rapidly and we’re delighted to reveal the indicative layout. We are more committed than ever to creating the greatest golf destination in the world.”

A plan of the new course shows that most of the holes will be to the inland side of the site, but it will have three holes hard against the North Sea at the southern end of the property. Martin Hawtree said: “At the centre there will be an outstanding par 72 golf course, ranging between 7,500 and 5,500 yards, so fit for all tastes and calibres, situated on land with an extraordinary richness of landscape and topography; but every inch a seaside links course. The special and subtle challenge for me is to ensure that it sits comfortably beside its majestic neighbour, neither outshone by the existing course nor making any attempt to mimic or rival those Leviathan qualities.”
