Tyler Rae completes renovation work at Woodland GC

Golf architect Tyler Rae has completed a renovation project on the Donald Ross-designed course at Woodland Golf Club on the outskirts of Boston, USA.

The project saw 67 new bunkers constructed across the course, the creation of a new third hole, and the expansion of the other 17 greens. New approach and fairway grassing lines have been introduced, along with the removal of a significant number of trees.

Donald Ross collaborated with Alex Findlay to extend the original nine-hole course a full 18-hole layout in 1903.

“We had a few rare ground photos circa 1903, and an article that described the holes accompanying them,” said Rae. “It was the third golf course that Ross reworked, and very early in his career. Alec Ross, Donald’s brother and the winner of the 1907 US Open, was the head golf professional at the club, and garnered Donald the job.”

Work began on 9 March, with construction handled by golf contractor MAS Golf Construction. The last piece of sod was laid on 12 June.

“I spent 59 of the 81 working days on the job site running the day to day project and personally shaped everything during the process,” said Rae. “The course was kept open the entire time to keep membership content.”
