Wollongong Golf Club set to open new holes following Ross Watson’s redesign

Wollongong Golf Club, one of Australia’s oldest clubs, is to reopen several holes over the summer following redesign work.

Following a masterplan created by designer Ross Watson, the latest work sees the course’s first hole extended and an undulating green added, which has been created at an elevated site beyond and to the left of the original location. The green complex on the seventh hole has been redesigned and new bunkering has been added. Wollongong’s 17th hole has a new green, re-shaped bunkers and new chipping areas. The teeing areas on the par-five 18th hole have been extended and new bunkers have been added to the fairway.

13 April is the date Leigh Hingston, the club’s general manager, has scheduled for reopening.

“For many months now, our members and guests have watched the new holes evolve and the new bent greens and couch fairways mature,” said Hingston. “It’s fair to say the excitement has been building and everyone is itching to get out there.”

“The routing of the holes that Ross Watson achieved in the masterplan was very clever and we’ve been faithful to those design elements in this stage of the project,” added Hingston. “Course superintendent Jake Gibbs and his staff have been fantastic and the membership as a whole have been so supportive. We’re really excited to be able to enhance this unique property where the natural sand dunes and beach front actually come into play on many of the holes.”
