Woodhall Spa to 'embrace innovation’ with new agronomy programme

Woodhall Spa Golf Club in Lincolnshire, England, has appointed golf consultancy Turfgrass to implement a multi-year agronomy programme for its Hotchkin and Bracken courses.

The club’s Hotchkin course began as nine holes laid out by Harry Vardon, was extended to 18 by Harry Colt and then redesigned in the 1920s by club owner Colonel SV Hotchkin. The Bracken course was added by Donald Steel in 1998, and Renaissance Golf Design completed a renovation of the Hotchkin course in 2019.

Turfgrass will start work, tailored to each course, in spring 2025, including pest management, irrigation optimisation, soil testing and nutrient programmes. Its goal is to refine each course’s presentation, enhance playability and support long-term environmental stewardship.

Brad Gould, managing director of Woodhall Spa, says: “Partnering with Turfgrass allows us to not only uphold our reputation for excellence but also to embrace innovation and adapt to the evolving demands of modern golf course management. We are excited to collaborate with a partner who shares our vision for sustainable, world-class golf.”

Julian Mooney, director of agronomy at Turfgrass, said: “By focusing on every detail, from plant health to optimising playability, we will not only enhance the immediate performance of these courses but also ensure their excellence for years to come."
