Zinkand nears completion of Shore course renovation at Monterey Peninsula

David Zinkand is nearing completion of the renovation of the Shore course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, California.

Zinkand’s multi-year plan for the renovation was to pay homage to Mike Strantz and Forrest Fezler’s 2003 redesign of the original 1962 layout, while improving aesthetics and adapting the course to modern player’s expectations.

The latest and final phase of renovation is expected to be complete in June and focuses on installing new drainage and CapillaryFlow liners into all bunkers and waste areas. In addition, new sand is being laid in formal bunkers while existing bunker sand is being screened and placed in waste areas. Several hazards have also been repositioned to encourage more strategic decision-making.

“The Shore course is rightfully regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful locales for golf,” said Zinkand. “Our team has remained true to what Mike created, while ensuring the course’s eminent playability and seaside character continue to shine through.”

The first phase of the renovation involved a turf reduction and waste area expansion, which allowed for larger native areas featuring fescue grasses and helped to reduce water consumption. In addition, overgrown coyote bushes were thinned and replaced to improve scenery and highlight the property’s seaside location and native cypress trees.

The second phase included levelling, refurbishing and regrassing teeing areas, with the aim of providing more options for players.

“Throughout the entirety of the project, we’ve viewed our work not only through a strategic lens, but also an aesthetic one,” said Zinkand. “For example, we’ve made a concerted effort to pull elements of the seaside holes into the inland stretch of the Shore course as a means of creating a heightened sense of place. This respect for a golf course’s aura and ecology, leaning into the natural ‘genius loci,’ is a core tenet of our firm.”
