Construction is under way on a new Peter Matkovich-designed golf course at The Hills Luxury Golf Estate in Harare, Zimbabwe.
“The Hills Luxury Golf Estate is part of our vision to develop premium gated communities in Zimbabwe,” said Ken Sharpe, CEO of WestProp Holdings. “The project has faced challenges typical of large-scale developments; however, the delays have allowed us to perfect the estate design and bring out a development that we had not imagined 14 years ago. We are working well with the authorities to get the necessary approvals and support.”
The project – WestProp has partnered with the City of Harare on the development – is estimated to cost US$280 million and includes 862 home sites. “It has been designed as a mixed-use luxury estate, incorporating residential, commercial and recreational spaces,” said Sharpe.
Work includes the complete revamp of the former Warren Hills layout. The course was previously leased to Warren Hills Golf Club, but that lease expired in April 2019, with the club continuing to occupy the land and not pay rent. In February 2023, WestProp won a court case against the club, with the course officially closing.
WestProp brought in Matkovich and his team to design a ‘PGA-standard’ golf course, while Mandla Ndebele, chief projects officer at WestProp, is overseeing civil engineering and construction.
“The layout is undergoing a complete redesign, with changes to the routing, greens, hazards and overall layout to enhance playability and aesthetics,” said Sharpe. “Matkovich’s design philosophy ensures that the course remains challenging yet enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels.
“The course is designed to cater to local and international golfers, including professionals and leisurely players. The redesign incorporates modern golfing standards, ensuring a premium experience for residents and visitors alike.”
WestProp has also been undertaking an afforestation initiative that includes planting over 2,000 indigenous trees as well as a wetlands rehabilitation project that has already led to the return of fish and birdlife.
Construction of the golf course is expected to be complete by mid-2026, with an anticipated opening of December 2026.
