The Winter 2022 issue of By Design magazine from the American Society of Golf Course Architects is now available in digital format.

For the main feature, By Design considers courses that have been built on sites with significant elevation change, and the techniques architects have employed to create a great golf experience. Brian Curley, Harrison Minchew, Kevin Atkinson and Bill Bergin provide insight into how they have carefully managed uphill climbs as well as taking advantage of the views and dramatic shots that elevated positions can offer.

This issue also considers the trade-off between slope and speed when designing greens. Todd Quitno reflects on what is important to golf course architects when designing putting surfaces.

There’s much more too, including the new ASGCA President Brit Stenson talking with Marc Whitney about his work around the globe and his focus on sustainability; news of the first Coore and Crenshaw course in New Zealand; profiles of the five golf course projects recognised in the 2022 ASGCA Environmental Excellence Awards; images from the 2022 ASGCA Annual Meeting, held in Providence, Rhode Island; and a page from the sketchbook of Brian Curley for a new club in Phnom Penh City, Cambodia.

By Design is free of charge. To subscribe, visit the By Design page of the ASGCA website, where you can also review the entire back catalogue.
