Another major reno for La Costa

Following the major renovation recently completed on its Champions course, the La Costa resort in southern California has announced a similar project for the South course.

As with the renovation of the Champions course, the South renovation will be handled by design firm Pascuzzo & Pate, in collaboration with former ASGCA president Jeff Brauer. When completed, the South will be renamed the Legends Course.

Work will begin on 1 May and the course is expected to reopen in late 2013. Golf architect Dick Wilson designed the course in 1965 and the club is keen to not affect the routing of the original design.

But the project will see the redesign and reconstruction of all eighteen greens, resurfaced tee complexes and all-new bunkering. Paspalum turfgrass will be planted on the fairways, though the greens will remain bentgrass. The greens at holes one, twelve and fifteen are to be slightly relocated, and a fifth tee will be added to each hole, meaning the course will play from 5,029-7,025 yards.

The fairways of the course will be widened, most notably on hole fifteen, with the landing area on the sharp dogleg left to be expanded by sixteen yards to the right.

"We have a lot of respect for La Costa's original routing and intend to maintain its integrity," said architect Damian Pascuzzo. "Our goal is to give golfers a completely different type of golf course to play at La Costa. We want to keep it fun and interesting, with different visuals and some subtle nuances around the greens."
