Development of second course at Soma Bay gets underway

A new golf course is taking shape on Egypt’s Red Sea coast.

Designed by architect Tim Lobb, work commenced on the new Soma Bay course this July.

The Soma Bay resort is home to an existing design by Gary Player’s firm – The Cascades. Lobb has been tasked with creating a new 18-hole layout that complements the resort’s existing golf facilities.

“The Player course is a wonderful championship golf course which challenges the golfing skills,” Lobb told GCA. “Our course is planned to be less challenging for the average golfer and offer a family friendly golfing experience. The course will complement the Player course beautifully, as the resort will become a complete golfing destination with multiple golfing experiences.”

The new course is being built on a windy, 1,100 hectare site that is surrounded by the Red Sea on three sides.

“Our plot of land will be on the higher central part of the site with long views of the Red Sea,” Lobb said. “Additionally, some holes will play down to the spectacular coast to offer and additional playing experience. We plan to create a golfer friendly desert golf experience. We expect the course to be around 6,500 yards and a par 70-71.”
