Indoor putting green at UK school

Top UK sports college Millfield School has installed an indoor putting green from Huxley Golf as part of its golf academy.

The three-hole installation inside the golf academy at Millfield is Huxley’s first such project at a British school

Thirty-two golfers aged 13-18, including six girls, are using the green to practise short game skills under the coaching of PGA professionals Karen Nicholls and Stuart Wells.

Nicholls, the school’s director of golf, said: “Huxley has provided a PGA standard putting green we can use the whole year round regardless of the weather. If you can practise your putting stroke on a consistent and pure surface your game is bound to improve considerably.”

A number of pupils using the Huxley green are in the England schools team. They include Sophie Keech, 13, from Lyme Regis, who plays off a handicap of three. She is a Dorset County Ladies Team player and was a member of the England Schools U18 Team during the summer.

Millfield, which has 1,250 pupils including 800 boarders, offers one of the most extensive ranges of sports facilities of any school in Britain. It established its golf academy in 1998.
