Medinah No.2 to undergo US$3.6 million restoration project
A US$3.6 million project to improve the No. 2 course at Medinah Country Club in Illinois, US, has been approved by the club.
Designed by architect Tom Bendelow, Medinah No. 2 opened in 1927. The upcoming project aims to restore the course to its original character, while also introducing a series of upgrades.
New tees, bunkers and USGA-standard greens will be introduced, as well as bentgrass fairways and improvements to the course’s storm drainage facilities.
The work on the club’s second course follows similar projects at Medinah’s No.1 and No.3 courses in recent years. Tom Doak carried out an upgrade to Course No. 1 which was completed in June 2014, while Rees Jones led a renovation of the No. 3 course in 2003, which was then selected as the host course for the 2012 Ryder Cup.
Jones will return to Medinah to act as an architectural consultant on the work, which is being led by Curtis Tyrell, Medinah’s director of golf course operations.
“Most people don’t know what a special gem Course No. 2 is,” said Tyrrell. “When we restore the design elements and upgrade the playing surfaces, it’s going to bring an exciting new dimension to the overall Medinah golf experience.”
