New Bates-designed course opens for play at the Canyons Resort

A new course designed by Gene Bates and Casey Bates of the Bates Golf Design Group has opened at the Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah.

A ribbon cutting ceremony took place on 1 October with the 6,256-yard course revealed to the public.

The course features over 550ft of elevation change and features bluegrass, native grass mix, and bentgrass grasses.

Located close to the Wasatch and Uinta mountain ranges, each hole at the course features four sets of tees, and six holes interact with skiable terrain.

“Canyons Golf Course is unlike any other course in Utah, and was a challenge to design and build,” said Gene Bates, course architect. “The topography of the area provided unique design elements and dramatic elevation changes, which is sure to keep each golfer on their toes through the course.”

The resort has a strong sustainability ethos, and techniques have been used at Canyons Golf to support the initiative. Much of the earth work carried out on the course featured unique construction methods, such as crushing several tons of rock on site to make topsoil which was used on the fairways, saving thousands of gallons of diesel fuel which would have been used hauling material away.

“The resort already has an extensive catalogue of summer activities, and Canyons Golf will take guest experience to the next level,” said Mike Goar, vice president and general manager of Canyons Resort. “After years of anticipation we are proud to celebrate this incredible course with the community.”
