Dunbar Golf Club receives green light for new short course by RAW Golf Design

Dunbar Golf Club in Scotland has received approval to build a new nine-hole course, designed by David J Russell and Ian Woosnam of RAW Golf Design.

The club, which was founded in 1856 and has since been extended and improved by Old Tom Morris, Ben Sayers and James Braid. It expects that the new par-three short course will make the club more attractive to international visitors, while also increasing local employment opportunities and boosting the local economy.

The proposal also includes a new G1 Architects-designed clubhouse, as well as a golf academy, driving range and greenkeeper facilities, all of which will form part of a new residential development by Cala Homes on the course.

“We first secured outline planning permission back in 2015, so it’s been a long journey to get here but we’re delighted,” said Jacky Montgomery, PGA director of golf at Dunbar Golf Club. “Having these exciting new facilities will not only be a major benefit for our members and visitors, but it also opens up significant opportunities for local people to get involved in golf and to enjoy the many health and well-being aspects of participating in the sport.

“From the driving range and academy, through to the short game practice area and the par-three golf course, we are breaking down barriers into the game. It will also give us much greater scope to further develop the work we do with our local schools and community groups.”

The club aims to start construction in summer 2023.

“We’re delighted to have received committee approval for our development proposals with Dunbar Golf Club,” said Alasdair Hughes, land manager with Cala Homes. “It’s an honour and privilege to have the opportunity to play a role in the next chapter of one of Scotland’s oldest golf clubs. This project will leave a powerful legacy, both in terms of sport and leisure – and local prosperity.”
