Indian Hill appoints Clayton, DeVries & Pont for course plan

Indian Hill Club, located less than 20 miles north of Chicago, Illinois, has appointed Clayton, DeVries & Pont (CDP) to develop a long-term course plan.

The original routing was laid out in 1913 by Harry Colt and Herbert Barker. A year later, Donald Ross oversaw construction of the course’s bunkers with subsequent work completed by William Langford.

“Our membership is very proud of our club’s heritage,” said Dan Dunn, chairman of the club’s golf course architect selection committee. “Our golf course’s unique collaboration of Colt, Ross and Langford has created an outstanding opportunity for a renovation honouring their Golden Age architectural principles. We are thrilled to partner with CDP to unlock the course’s full potential to inspire every golfer to find challenge, wonder, and delight in each round.”

Over the next few months, CDP will analyse the course and conduct historical research. Mike DeVries and Frank Pont will lead the project with assistance from Mike Clayton and Edward Cartwright.

“Frank and I have greatly enjoyed working together at Bloomfield Hills Country Club [which will feature in the October issue of GCA] in Detroit, our first Colt project in the US,” said DeVries. “With the added benefit of Mike Clayton’s wisdom and insight, I am confident that we will be able to deliver a markedly improved course for Indian Hill’s members to enjoy. Having attended college at Lake Forest, it will be great to be back spending time in Illinois.”

Pont added: “Having advised Colt clients in Europe for almost 20 years, it is wonderful to now be using my knowledge of the great man’s work to help clubs in the US. Given that Indian Hill was designed by three of the best, we intend to create a plan which will allow us to undertake renovations that are respectful of the architects who made a contribution to the course’s development.”

Cartwright said: “I would like to thank the board of Indian Hill for placing its trust in CDP. The course was created through a collaboration by American and international architects… 110 years later, history is repeating itself.”
