A major project will kick off early next year at the Southern Hills Golf Club near Liberty City, Texas.

The club’s course will close on 2 January 2017 ahead of a major redesign, led by golf course architect Jeff Brauer.

The redesign coincides with significant real estate development at the site, and an area of land to the south-east of the existing course currently covered in forest will be redeveloped.

On this new site, six new holes will be developed. These will play as holes 11-16 on the new layout, and will be surrounded by more than 100 quarter acre real estate lots.

Holes 11 and 16 will play around an existing lake, while the new course’s longest hole will come on the 13th, which will be a 594-yard par five.

A number of new holes will be developed over the existing course – namely the seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, seventeenth and eighteenth.

The course’s six opening holes will remain as they currently stand, but with renovations to improve their playability.

A new driving range and practice area will be constructed towards the north of the site on land that used to comprise parts of the Southern Hills course.

The club will also change its name from Southern Hills Golf Club to Tempest Golf Club once it reopens. This is scheduled for October 2017.
